Almost half of Weight-Loss surgery patients suffer serious complications
It's already known that gastric by pass surgery, gastric band surgery and other surgeries for
weight loss
carry deadly risks, but what was perhaps not known was just how common these risks were.
A new US government report has found thatfor weight loss surgery:
22% of patients in hospital had complications
but 44% of discharged patients had complications during 1st 6 months.
That means that 4 in 10 people who have the weight loss surgery develop complications.
Among the most common complications were:
- Dumping syndrome, which involves vomiting, reflux and diarrhoea
- Complications resulting from the surgical joining of the intestine & stomach
- Abdominal hernias
- Infections and pneumonia
A patient with complications not only has to deal with the health issues, but also the costs:
* costs averaged £ 20,000 for obesity surgery patients who had complications in the 6 months after surgery
* but for those readmitted to the hospital as a result of these complications, costs averaged over £35,000.
Needless to say, we are not advocates of this procedure, especially considering there are far more effective, healthy and less expensive options for weight loss with lose weight good nutrition.
